Dear Parents,
My name is Mrs. Xiong and I am your child’s second grade teacher for the 2007-2008 school year at Jackson Magnet, room 202. I taught at Maxfield Magnet in first and second grade for the last four years. Before that, I was a Language Academy Teacher for two years at Mississippi Elementary. I worked at Jackson as an Educational Assistant for six years before becoming a teacher.
Your child is required to read every night starting September 4th. There will be a clear plastic homework folder that comes home everyday. In the folder, there is a student planner that indicates what your child has for homework for the evening. You need to initial your child’s planner to verify that your child has completed his or her assignments. Spelling words will be given to students on Friday for the spelling test on the following Friday. I will check each student’s homework folder daily to make sure that each student is keeping up with his or her homework. Homework is very important because it helps students practice skills that we have learned.
There will be a weekly newsletter that will come home on Friday. Attached to the weekly newsletter will be your child’s weekly data sheet. The data sheet will contain a record of your child’s homework for the week, spelling score, math test score if a test is taken that week, and an update of how many books your child has read. You need to sign the bottom portion of the weekly newsletter to verify that you have read the newsletter and seen your child’s data sheet. If you have any comments or concerns, please write them in the comments section. You may also call me at 651-293-8650. I might not be able to speak to you during the day, but please leave a message and I will get back to you as soon as I can. My Prep time is 1:30-2:20, so that would be the best time to contact me.
I believe that every child has the potential to learn and succeed regardless of his or her ethnicity, background, or socio-economic status. Please work with me to make sure that your child becomes the best he or she can be. If you ever have a concern, please communicate with me so that we can work out something together to benefit your child’s success in school. My goal is to help each student meet second grade standards in math, reading, and writing. With your help, I know we can do it.
If you have internet access at home, you can log on to http://jackson.spps.org/Mrs_Xiong.html for math and reading learning activities and games for your child. You can also view homework assignments for the week, the weekly newsletter, photos of students activities, and other information.
In closing, I would just like to say that I am looking forward to a great year of working with you and your child! You are welcome to visit our classroom any time. Thank you in advance for your concern and support throughout the year!!!
