Preparatory Magnet is the first school in the Saint
Paul Public School
District to offer a K-3+ Hmong Dual Language Program.
The program is designed to mentor students to better navigate their bicultural
world by rooting them in their cultural and linguistic. The
mission of the program is two-fold; to develop students who are bilingual,
biliterate and bicultural and to help students acquire English language skills
in a richer more complete manner. The program was established at the beginning
of the 2006-2007 school year with kindergarten and first grade classes. In
2007-2008 Pre-K and second grade will be added to the program. A grade level
will be added each year after that until the program becomes a Pre-K-6 grade
program. In Pre-K through third grade all core subject areas
including reading will be taught in Hmong by a licensed Hmong bilingual
teacher. Additionally, a portion of the day will be dedicated to English
language development. In grades 4-6 students will continue
to receive instruction in Hmong literacy while the rest of their day will be in
English. The Hmong materials used have been especially designed by the program
developers and staff.
